The Wonderful Name Of Jesus
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matt 28:18-20
Jesus has all the authority in heaven and on earth, but He delegated this authority to every believer who has made Him Lord when He said “Go therefore and make disciples…” We now have the authority on the earth that Adam once had in the Garden of Eden before the fall; we are God’s representatives on the earth.
According to scripture we have been given full authority, or the power of attorney, to use the name of Jesus. The divine mystery of God lies in the power of this wonderful Name.
“So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." John 20:21
What is “power of attorney”?
“The power of attorney is the legal authority to act for another person in legal and business matters” (Encarta Dictionary). In other words the power and authority to act on the behalf of the person who has the authority.
The power of the Name of Jesus
“Jesus is the historical name; Christ (the equivalent of the Hebrew. Messiah, "anointed one") is the title of His office. The two names were not generally used together as a proper name until after the Ascension. Son of David and son of Abraham relate Jesus to the Messianic promises.” (Wycliffe Commentary)
The Name of Jesus is mentioned 980 times in the New Testament. He is the one that Israel awaited for thousands of years. The purpose for His coming was to set people free from sin and to reconcile them back to God. The name Jesus is derived from the Old Testament name Joshua, which means Savior. Mathew 1:21 says, talking about Mary, “She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus [the Greek form of the Hebrew Joshua, which means Savior], for He will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent them from failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God]”. (AMP)
We have the authority…
All the power and all the authority that Jesus has, is invested in His name and the Word of God teaches us we have the right to use the name of Jesus:
- In prayer to the Father - “…That whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you” John 15:16
- In healing of the sick – “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons." Matt 10:8) and “…In My name…they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:17-18
- In dealing with demons – …“In My name they will cast out demons…” Mark 16:17
- The power of agreement – “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." Matthew 18:20
The measure of His ability is the measure of the value of that name, and all that is invested in that name belongs to us. If we will learn to understand the authority in the name of Jesus we could change the world.
I have many testimonies of how the Lord delivered me and fellow Christian workers from danger and manifested His power through the use of the name of Jesus! This is just one of them.
During one of the open-air meetings in the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, a group of men approached the area where we were preaching and began gambling at the foot of the cross. I used the cross as a visual aid to demonstrate the crucifixion of Christ – it’s a powerful visual and they did this regularly to try to distract us from preaching the Word. When I asked them to gamble anywhere other than in front of the cross one of the men who was well over 200 lbs, came up to me and hit me as hard as he could in the chest. I was shocked at first but when he punched me again, the name of Jesus rose up in me, and as he raised his arm to strike me a third time I said to him, “In the name of Jesus, you will not hit me again!” Instantly, the man froze and could not move! The crowd roared with joy. I’m not sure how long the man stayed in that position but when I gave the people an opportunity to accept Christ, the crowd came running to the cross to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. The power and authority of the name of Jesus was manifest for all to witness that day. Hallelujah!
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
John 14:12-14
The name of Jesus was forbidden
Several times in the book of Acts the disciples were warned and commanded by the council, and the high priests not to speak nor teach in the name of Jesus. They were even beaten and imprisoned for preaching in His name. This proves that these people knew the power of the name of Jesus and actively tried to hinder the use of His name. Acts 5:41-42 says, “So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”
Nothing will stop the wonderful name of Jesus being preached. Throughout history there were those who burned bibles to stop the Word of the Lord going forth and others have killed Christians so that the gospel of Christ would be stopped. But there is no governing body or authority that will ever be able to stamp out the name of Jesus, or erase the Word of God from the earth. We encourage you to use your authority in the name of Jesus in any situation that tries to hinder your walk with the Lord or tries to cause you
to fear.
Praise God for the mighty name of Jesus!
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
