The Truth Will Set You Free

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32

The claims of Jesus, so simple and so lofty, impressed some of those who were present. Many believed. Yet before long they were picking up stones to cast at him (John 8:59). It is the old story of pseudo faith. In this case, they did not abide in His word, which is necessary for true discipleship, and which opens the way to knowing the truth more fully to the point of being set free through it (vs. 32). These compact statements are amplified in what follows. (Wycliffe Bible Commentary)

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

The moment you and I accepted Christ into our lives, the greatest miracle took place. This was the great exchange where we became a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17); He took our shame, our guilt, our judgment upon Himself, so that we can walk freely in this life and the life to come. Now there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ, so we can now walk free from guilt and shame. All glory to Jesus for His amazing grace.

We became a brand new person spiritually; our old life of sin has passed away and our sin is remembered no more. The word of God says in Philippians 3:12-14 that we must forget those things which are behind and press towards the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

“He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Ps 103:10-12 (NKJV)

When we study the Word of God we find that the Lord has provided freedom for us in many ways:

  1. Freedom from death, eternal separation from God
  2. Freedom from past sins and bondages
  3. Freedom in the realm of the soul
  4. Freedom from sickness and disease
  5. Freedom from poverty

Now we have to work on all of the above to maintain our freedom in Christ. It’s a free gift but we are going to be challenged by our Adversary to maintain it. It takes the God-kind of faith to operate in God’s kingdom.

God has put the spiritual and natural laws of government into operation to protect the citizens of the land and to keep them free from intruders. That is why we have the army, the navy and the air force, etc., to protect the citizens of the land so that they may walk in freedom.  This is how He originally planned it. Now, anyone coming into His kingdom must abide by the laws of the Kingdom, if not, they put themselves back into bondage, spiritually-speaking.

Before we came to the understanding of this glorious freedom in Christ we were yoked to the enemy of our souls. We were all led astray and followed the dictator, the deceiver Satan, who deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9), but now that we have come to Christ we are yoked with Him, and His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11: 28-30).

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (NASU)

The bondage of sin is the most grievous bondage; but freedom from its guilt and shame is the greatest liberty.

The greatest way to walk in this freedom is to take scriptures that are relative to our freedom in Christ and apply them daily, meditate on them and say them over and over until they become a revelation. Also, the Word of God instructs us to walk in the Spirit and be led by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of life, the Spirit of truth, it is by the Spirit of God that Jesus came to bring freedom to the captives and He is the one who will continuously lead, guide and govern our lives if we will learn to know Him. Hallelujah!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
