Clothed With Glory
by Bro. Peter Rahme

“Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself." Genesis 3:9-10

Before his fall, Adam was clothed with the glory of God. He could approach His heavenly Father whenever he desired, but when he disobeyed God his sin stripped him of the glory and left him naked. When Adam lost his glory, or his clothing, he lost the privilege of walking with his Father in the cool of the day, and the intimacy of their fellowship. What’s more is he even lost his authority over the beasts of the field and now had to keep them at bay. The consequences of his fall were so great that he lost his second son at the hands of his first. Shame, embarrassment, condemnation and every evil work began in the earth from that moment forth. Adam was banished from the beautiful and peace-filled Garden of Eden forever.

Now, as descendants of Adam (See The Two Adams), we have inherited his sin nature (Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”). When we lost the glory of God, we lost our godly nature, our sensitivity of heart, love for God and our neighbor. No matter how hard we tried, even to the point of sacrificing of millions of animals, our sins were only covered and we were never wholly in right standing with our holy God. Mankind didn’t have the ability then, and still doesn’t now, to make it spiritually or save ourselves. The Bible says our righteousness is like filthy rags before Him (Isaiah 64:6).

But even in this fallen state God didn’t forsake us. He provided a way for the human race to come back to Him. He sent His beloved Son to deliver us from eternal damnation. He showed us the way back to God. By receiving Him we again receive His godly nature, tenderness, compassion and love. We become covered and clothed once again with the glory of God.

We are now heirs of God through Jesus
“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Galatians 4:4-7

Jesus Christ is the light of the world and the manifest glory of the Father; He is the only hope for the human race. When we turn from our wicked ways and surrender our lives to Him, we are delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God. Romans 13:14 says we must “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Definition of the words put on: In the sense of sinking into a garment; to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively) (Strong's Concordance). This means by receiving Christ, we are clothed with the glory of God, clothed with His righteousness, His love and compassion once again.

Clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ
“But clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and stop making provision for the sinful nature with a view to a passionate craving.” Romans 13:14 (Wuest)

Let’s look at what the Word says about clothing ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. Study the scriptures below that show us what we need to do, to walk once again with our God as Adam did in the cool of the day.

Walking in the newness and glory of Christ:

  • Put on the Lord Jesus Christ – Romans 13:14
  • Put on the armor of light - Romans 13:12
  • For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ – Galatians 3:27
  • Put on the new man - Ephesians 4:24, Colossians 3:10
  • Put on the whole armor of God - Ephesians 6:11
  • Put on the breastplate of righteousness - Ephesians 6:14
  • Put on tender mercies - Colossians. 3:12
  • Put on love - Colossians 3:14

By receiving Christ, we receive the attributes of God - a godly nature, sensitivity of heart, compassion and tenderness.  Our fleshly nature still wars against our godly nature however (Romans 7:15-25), so we must strive to live our lives governed by these attributes and walk like Him in every area of our lives. Galatians 3:27 says, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”  We can now come boldly to the throne of grace and obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

We have to continuously remind ourselves that we are a three-part being: we are a spirit, we live in a body, and we have a soul. We therefore have to train our spirit, soul and body to do the will of the Father and stay faithful in serving the Lord, walking in His glory.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
